Imagine that you just received your invitation to the Oscars. Now it’s time to decide how you want to travel to the star-studded event. Most automakers offer big luxury cars that reward the wealthy, but you need something truly grand – a giant step up from the ordinary.

When you really need to stand out, you may look for something with a hood ornament you don’t see every day: something like a Rolls Royce or a Bentley. But don’t overlook cars from more mainstream manufacturers that have more experience assembling reliable rides. Plenty of them, from Mercedes-Benz to Lexus – even newly reinvigorated Cadillac – offer worthy alternatives with all the opulence you expect from boutique brands. The difference is, once the awards show ends, you can still drive them every day without trips to the dealership to repair broken baubles.

These eight cars make worthy limos that will entice you to repose in the rear and leave the driving to others. Some might even inspire you to sneak out for a midnight spin behind the wheel. Just don’t tell Jeeves.

Porsche Panamera Turbo Executive

Leave it to the most popular sports car company in the world to deliver real performance in an executive sedan: the Porsche Panamera Turbo Executive. Full-sized celebrities easily fit in the back of standard Panameras, while Executive models offer reclining, massaging rear thrones to rival those in a Mercedes S-Class.

However, the back seat probably isn’t where you want to ride in a Panamera. Even with all their leg room, the rear seats hug passengers between narrow bolsters – to hold them in place, in case a stunt driver pounds around a race track. Staying in place is key in the low-slung Panamera Turbo with its twin-turbocharged 570-horsepower V8 engine. Porsche used to build the 928 sports coupe, which many driving enthusiasts considered a German Chevrolet Corvette. Consider the Panamera Turbo Executive a Corvette limo, with both street and track cred.

Rolls Royce Ghost EWB

Naturally, the Ghost is thoroughly customizable inside, from the lambs-wool carpet to the suede headliner, and from the contrasting veneer band on the dashboard to the rear hat shelf. All four seats can heat or cool your backside and give you a massage. Those in the rear can also be equipped with aircraft-style headrests to keep your neck from flopping around after the massage relaxes you into a torpor. Black-out curtains and a cooler in the rear arm rest are also a must. Rear passengers – the most important ones, after all – can order a full theater experience on the rear TV screens, which come with proper television tuners. That’s how you can keep abreast of all the fashion faux pas of earlier arrivals. A dedicated rear-compartment telephone complements the Ghost’s standard WiFi connection.

The Ghost EWB comes standard with Rolls Royce’s BMW-derived V12 engine, which delivers more than adequate power at a rated 563 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque.

To ensure your chauffeur keeps all those draft horses under control, the Ghost is available with all the latest driver-safety aids including night-vision, active cruise control, and a lane departure warning system that subtly vibrates the steering wheel, rather than alarming restful passengers. The Ghost is easily the most comfortable and secure place to snooze on the road for (barely) under $300,000.

Bentley Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase

An extended-wheelbase model for chauffeured VIPs and a twin-turbo Speed version are but two of the configurations you might consider for Bentley’s latest and greatest sedan. It’s also available in a base model, but who’d want that, after dropping $300 large on a car?

The Extended Wheelbase model has almost 10-inches-more rear legroom than standard models, and offers twin reclining rear seats with fold-out foot-rests, rear control for the heat and air conditioning, a TV tuner for the rear seats, and dual vanity mirrors inside the rear roof pillars.

You can order your Bentley in any of 114 colors, with 1,024 different interior color combinations, and five different steering wheels. That’s without even counting custom stitching and piping on the seats. Half the joy of buying a Bentley Mulsanne is in the time you spend ordering it.

BMW 750i xDrive

The BMW 7-Series once reigned supreme as the ultra-lux sedan that well-heeled owners would just as soon enjoy from behind the wheel. With its light-weight integrated carbon fiber structure, the latest model is throwing down the gantlet to retake that title, while never forsaking rear-seat noblesse.

Rear passengers can move the right front seat up against the dashboard to open up all the space they want to recline and extend the built-in foot rest. A touch screen in the rear center arm rest offers full control of audio and navigation functions, so you can watch whatever you want on individual rear entertainment screens.

Available with either BMW’s silky turbocharged inline six-cylinder in the 740i or a twin-turbo V8 in the 750i, this big sedan is also available with all-wheel drive. It’s the first vehicle to use hand gestures in the air to control the infotainment system. Similar to the Mercedes-Maybach, the 7-Series offers traffic-jam lane-keeping assistance and autonomous cruise control with stop-and-go, to automatically creep along with the hoi polloi. It can even motor itself into and out of parking spaces.

Cadillac CT6

Cadillac’s latest creation aims to retake the crown Cadillac carried half a century ago, as the luxury standard of the world. In the process, it may capture the title of the chauffeur’s favorite luxury sedan.

With a choice of a twin-turbo V6, a conventional V6, or even a turbocharged four-cylinder, the CT6 makes a lithe and lively dance partner.

Inside, the CT6 reminds us of the swankiest international airport lounge brimming the latest digital technology. It uses the first digital camera-based rear-view mirror, in addition to Cadillac’s buttonless CUE infotainment system. Engineers have stepped up CUE’s usability, though, with a more responsive volume slider, along with Home and Mute buttons, and Apple’s CarPlay iPhone connection. Night-vision helps drivers spot pedestrians and crossing deer in the dark. Rear-wheel steering and adaptive shock absorbers in the Active Chassis Package makes the CT6 feel a lot smaller than it is from behind the wheel.

Rear seat passengers don’t have room for extendable foot rests in the CT6, but they do get sumptuous heated leather seats and individual rear temperature control. If you’re looking for the ultimate luxury sedan, and you actually like to drive, the CT6 could be your car.
